Your first chiropractic visit in Cedar Park at Gateway to Wellness takes about 60 to 90 minutes and covers a full consultation, X-rays, a thorough physical exam, and a report of findings where you’ll hear exactly what we found and what we recommend. Nothing about it should feel rushed or confusing — and by the time you leave, you’ll have a clear plan in hand.
Why the First Visit Is Different from Every Visit After
A lot of people picture a chiropractic appointment as walking in, getting adjusted, and walking out. That may be what a routine visit looks like after we’ve established care — but the first visit is entirely different. It’s a discovery session as much as anything else.
In 15+ years of practice, I’ve learned that the people who get the best results are the ones we understand deeply from the start. That means understanding not just where you hurt, but how long it’s been going on, what makes it better or worse, what you’ve already tried, what injuries or accidents you’ve had in the past, and — most importantly — what this pain is keeping you from doing.
That last question drives everything. Getting you back to what you love is the whole point.
Step 1: The Consultation
Before anyone touches your spine, we sit down and talk. You’ll fill out intake paperwork that covers your health history, current symptoms, and goals. Then I’ll sit with you one-on-one to go deeper.
We’ll talk through your pain in detail — when it started, whether there was a triggering event, how it’s changed over time, and how it affects your daily life. I’ll ask about past injuries, surgeries, and any treatments you’ve already tried. I want to understand the full picture of what brought you to this point.
This part isn’t rushed. One of the things patients consistently tell us is that they feel truly heard here, often for the first time in their healthcare experience. That matters — because what you share in this conversation shapes everything that follows.
Step 2: X-Rays
For most new patients, we take X-rays right there in our Cedar Park office. This isn’t a formality — it’s one of the most important diagnostic tools we have.
X-rays let me see the actual alignment of your spine: how your vertebrae are positioned relative to each other, whether there’s disc space narrowing, any signs of arthritis or degeneration, and whether there are structural issues that would affect how I approach your care. You simply can’t know these things from a physical exam alone.
Some patients come in worried about what the X-rays might show. I always tell them: the information is your friend. Knowing what’s there allows us to treat you correctly. Not knowing is what leads to guesswork and slow results.
Step 3: The Physical Examination
After X-rays, we move into the hands-on portion of the assessment. This is where I use sophisticated orthopedic testing to evaluate how your body is actually functioning — not just where it hurts.
I’ll check your range of motion in the spine and any affected joints. I’ll test muscle strength and neurological reflexes. I’ll assess your posture and how your body is compensating for whatever’s going on. And I’ll use applied muscle resistance testing — pressing on your arms or legs and feeling how they respond — to identify imbalances in real time.
This hands-on assessment is something patients often find eye-opening. I can find tension and restriction in areas you didn’t even know were a problem, and when I show you the connection between those hidden imbalances and your primary pain, things start to make sense in a way they didn’t before.
Step 4: Report of Findings
This is one of my favorite parts of the first visit. After reviewing your X-rays and exam findings, I sit back down with you and walk through everything we found — in plain language, not medical jargon.
You’ll see your X-rays. I’ll explain what’s happening in your spine, why your body is responding the way it is, and how the various pieces connect. I’ll explain the root cause of your pain rather than just naming a diagnosis and leaving you to figure out what it means.
Then we build a plan together. I’ll give you a specific treatment recommendation: how many visits, over what timeframe, what each phase of care is working toward, and how we’ll measure your progress. You’ll leave knowing exactly what to expect — not “it depends” or “let’s see how you respond.”
Step 5: Your First Adjustment (and More)
In most cases, we also begin treatment on the first visit. Once I understand your spine and your situation, there’s no reason to wait.
Our chiropractic adjustments are precise and personalized. I use both manual adjustments — the traditional hands-on technique — and precision instrument-based adjustments for patients who prefer a gentler approach or have specific conditions that call for it. Either way, the goal is the same: restore proper alignment, reduce nerve pressure, and give your body the best conditions to heal.
As a new patient, your first visit also includes shockwave therapy and laser therapy as part of our new patient special — tools that work alongside the adjustment to reduce inflammation and accelerate tissue healing from the very first session.

Common Questions Before a First Visit
Does an adjustment hurt?
Most patients feel immediate relief after an adjustment, not pain. You may feel a brief pressure sensation or hear a popping sound — that’s just gas releasing from the joint, the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles. Some patients feel a little sore the next day, similar to how muscles feel after a workout, but that typically fades quickly.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing makes the exam and treatment easier. Athletic wear or casual clothes work well. You don’t need to bring anything special — just yourself and your health history if you have it.
How many visits will I need?
That depends entirely on what we find during your exam. Some patients with straightforward issues see significant improvement in just a few weeks. More complex or chronic cases take longer. What I can promise is that I’ll give you a specific, honest answer during your report of findings — not a vague “we’ll see.”
Do you take insurance?
We accept most major insurance plans. Our team can verify your coverage before your visit. For patients without coverage or with high deductibles, we offer affordable self-pay options and a $50 new patient package that includes the full first visit experience.
What Makes Our Approach Different
A lot of chiropractic offices will do a quick exam and jump straight to adjusting you. We take the time to actually understand your body before we touch it. That means looking at your posture, your muscle imbalances, your full injury history, and the lifestyle factors that may be contributing to your pain.
We also take the time to explain things. Patients leave our office with a real understanding of what’s happening in their body and why — not just a follow-up appointment card. That education is part of the healing process.
